To help you understand if you may want to volunteer, here are answers to some Frequently Asked Questions:
If you're looking to come and serve, you're in the right place! Hopefully the information below will help you understand more about what we do and how this works.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON THE TRIP?
Expect that going to do Disaster Recovery work, you will grow. No matter how much you give to those you serve, you will get more back by making the trip. We don’t rough it, for the most part we stay in motels, but we adapt to what is necessary with each situation. We are treated at dinner as we have one person who loves to make it her mission to work with a couple of volunteers and cook for the team. In the evenings after dinner we have a short program, sing a bit and discuss the day and thoughts for the next day.
HOW DO I FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PARTICIPATING?
We send periodic emails out to those on our email list as we get closer to the departure date. You are encouraged to let us know what questions are on your mind. About 6-8 weeks before we go we have an informational meeting to discuss previous trips and what a person may expect on this trip. About 5 weeks prior to departure we ask that a decision be made and paperwork turned in.
IF I DON’T HAVE ANY CONSTRUCTION TALENT, CAN I BE HELPFUL?
We cannot stress enough that you DO NOT need construction talent to go on the trip. We organize Outreach Opportunities for quite a number of people who prefer to work with local non-profits at relief sites, food banks, shelters, etc. If you would like to learn some construction skills, we have talented and very patient Team Leaders who love to coach you along. If you want to try a little of both, NO PROBLEM! As Project Coordinators, we reevaluate the work every day and are very happy to let you try different jobs. We are absolutely serious that if you think all you can do is push a broom, we can find a job that you will love and make a difference to those you serve.
WHAT KIND OF WORK WILL WE BE DOING?
We communicate and work with several Agencies and Non-Profits to identify where we can help the most. About 2-3 weeks before embarking on the trip we begin receiving pretty accurate scope as to the type of work we should expect to do. We will assign you projects based on your skills, interests and ability. Participants will be divided into teams of 4 to 8, depending on the project. Each Team will have one or two leaders who are skilled in the task ahead and ready to coach the Team Members.
WHAT TYPE OF PAPERWORK IS NEEDED?
All participants are required to fill out a few forms. One is a Skill Assessment. We use that to match up your talents or interests to the work we find out is at our destination. The others really let us know important information about you such as dietary concerns, allergies, physical limitations and emergency contacts.
Most of all, remember that.....ANYONE can make a difference.
